The Top 10 Senior Activities For 55+ Residents

Author, So Alive After 55 – Your Guide To The Finer Points Of Active Adult Living

As many already know that have read my book, So Alive After 55, it was inspired by working with the retired adults (or soon to be retired) in my previous career of 28+ years as a Vice President of a well-respected Home Builder. The last 20+ years of my career, I was focused on 9 Active Adult Communities in South Florida.
The objective of my book was to provide a step-by-step, how-to guide for those seeking to live an active adult lifestyle in their next chapter of life. This article will be the first of many that will provide the “detail” on the most popular senior activities you may have to choose from should you live in an Active Adult Community.
CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES

In Chapter 7 of my book, I list close to 50 activities and clubs available to active adults in various 55+ communities. My goal here is to narrow that list down to around 10 or so of the most popular senior activities to give you an inside look from those that lead these activities and clubs.
THOSE IN “THE KNOW”

My first step was meeting with multiple Social Directors in active adult communities, to understand the mix of activities offered and those which are the most popular among those residents. Next, I interviewed those individuals that are the leaders or founders of clubs and various activities.
Over the next few months, I will bring you articles written by those residents. Articles written by Presidents of Clubs, Founders and Leaders of activities, who will provide you with information about each activity from those that are involved “knee deep” in them.  So, there is no need to speculate….
YOUR VALUE
Only you will be able to decide the value of each article and how it impacts you…what is inspiring about the article that helps you recognize what sparks your interest and curiosity.

SENIOR ACTIVITIES THAT ARE FUN AND MIND PROVOKING

When you are no longer working and have some free time on your hands, you may find yourself thinking about some of the activities that are popular in active adult communities. Some of those thoughts may include something relaxing but fun and mind provoking, like joining in a game of Canasta. Or possibly something more active like Bocce Ball or Pickle Ball? It all sounds great…. but you don’t know how to play Canasta or Pickleball. That is the detail these articles will provide you.

WHAT AND HOW

My research includes a compilation of information from various sources, including residents currently living in Senior or Active Adult Communities in Florida. Many of the communities offer a multitude of activities, along with a variety of many Clubs.  Clubs such as the Men’s Club to the Women’s Club to the Bocce Club? So, which Club should you join?  How many clubs can you join? Does it cost money to join a club? All good questions… and you will find many of those answers in the forthcoming articles that will assist you and point you in a direction that is matched with your interests and potential.

TOP CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES- WHICH ONES ARE FOR ME?

You can engage in all sorts of activities, meet new people from all walks of life, experience that great feeling of “togetherness, forge lifetime friendships and explore your passions by engaging in some of the top clubs and activities.

HEALTH BENEFITS AND SOCIALIZING

“Close friends linked to a sharper memory, ‘Maintaining strong social networks seems to be linked to a slower cognitive decline’. “Maintaining positive, warm and trusting friendships might be the key to a slower decline in memory and cognitive functioning, according to a Northwestern Medicine Study. You don’t have to be the life of the party, but this study supports the theory that maintaining strong social networks seems to be linked to slower cognitive decline”, said senior author Emily Rogalski, associate professor at Northwestern’s CNADC.
